Heads up: upscaling increases file size dramatically (often 3–15×). It works best on scanned or image-based PDFs. Text-only vector PDFs are already sharp — upscaling them converts text to pixels.

What is PDF Upscaling and Why Does It Matter?
PDF upscaling is the process of increasing the effective resolution of a PDF document — making its pages sharper, larger in pixel dimensions, and more suitable for printing or high-resolution displays. A PDF is a structured container: text, vector graphics, embedded fonts, and raster images all live inside it. When a PDF is scanned or built from low-resolution images, its effective resolution is limited by those images. Upscaling rebuilds the document at a higher resolution, so each page contains more pixels than before.
Resolution matters most at the print stage. A 72 DPI image looks fine on a phone screen but prints as a blurry mess. A 300 DPI image is the industry standard for print quality. A 600 DPI scan preserves fine detail for archival, legal, or medical use. Many print shops, government portals, and professional workflows explicitly require documents at 300 DPI or higher — and they will reject anything less. If your PDF was scanned at low resolution years ago, or received as a compressed email attachment, upscaling is often the only way to meet those requirements without rescanning the physical document.
The Web Tool Bazar Upscale PDF Tool brings this capability directly to your browser. Every page is re-rendered at a higher resolution using pdf.js, optionally enhanced with contrast and sharpening, and rebuilt into a new PDF with pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and nothing is logged. When you close the tab, the entire session vanishes — leaving behind only the higher-resolution PDF you downloaded.
What Upscaling Can (and Cannot) Do
Honesty matters here. Upscaling is interpolation — it computes new pixels between existing ones — not magic. It cannot recreate detail that was never captured. A blurry face in a 72 DPI scan will still be a blurry face at 600 DPI, just larger and slightly smoother. But that does not mean upscaling is useless. It means you should understand what it improves and what it does not.
What upscaling improves
Print size without pixelation. A 300 DPI page can be printed at full size without visible pixel blocks, while a 72 DPI version shows obvious squares.
Perceived sharpness on screen. High-quality interpolation plus a mild sharpening pass makes scans look cleaner and more legible.
Small text legibility. When a scan is at the edge of readability, upscaling plus enhancement often pushes it over the threshold.
Compliance with portal requirements. Many systems simply check the embedded image DPI and reject anything below 300.
What upscaling does not do
Recover lost detail. If the original capture was blurry, the upscaled version is a larger blurry image.
Remove JPEG artifacts. Compression blocks from the original scan remain visible, just bigger.
Fix a bad photo. Out-of-focus or motion-blurred content cannot be salvaged by interpolation.
Shrink file size. Upscaling always increases file size, often by 3–15×.
In short: upscaling is a legitimate, useful tool for print preparation and document cleanup. It is not a substitute for rescanning when the source is genuinely bad.

How PDF Upscaling Actually Works
Inside the browser, upscaling is a four-stage pipeline. Understanding each stage helps you choose the right settings.
Stage 1 — Render at higher resolution
pdf.js renders each PDF page onto an HTML canvas. The rendering scale determines the output resolution: a scale of 2 produces twice as many pixels per side as the original (four times the total pixels), a scale of 4 produces sixteen times the pixels. PDF pages use points as their base unit, where 1 point = 1/72 inch, so a scale of 4.1667 produces 300 DPI output and a scale of 8.3333 produces 600 DPI output.
Stage 2 — High-quality interpolation
Canvas rendering uses the browser's built-in image smoothing, which is typically a high-quality bicubic or Lanczos-style interpolation. Text and vector content are rasterised at full target resolution, so they are redrawn sharply rather than stretched from a smaller bitmap.
Stage 3 — Optional enhancement
When Smart Enhancement is enabled, a mild contrast and saturation boost is applied to the rendered page. When Sharpening is enabled, an unsharp-mask-style convolution (an SVG filter with a 3×3 kernel) adds edge definition. Both are deliberately conservative — they improve perceived clarity without producing halos or over-sharpening artifacts.
Stage 4 — Rebuild the PDF
Each enhanced page is encoded as a high-quality JPEG (quality 0.85–0.95 depending on your Output Quality setting) and embedded into a new PDF via pdf-lib. The new page keeps the original physical dimensions, so the document looks identical on screen and prints at the same size — but each page now carries many more pixels.
How to Use the Upscale PDF Tool — Step by Step
1
Upload Your PDF File
Click "Select PDF File" or drag a single PDF into the dashed drop zone. The file loads instantly — nothing is being uploaded.
2
Choose a Mode
Scale Mode: pick 1x (enhance only), 2x, 3x or 4x. Target DPI Mode: tap a preset like 300 DPI or 600 DPI, or type any custom DPI.
3
Tune Enhancement & Quality
Leave Smart Enhancement and Mild Sharpening on for scanned documents. Choose Maximum, Balanced or Compact output quality depending on how much file size you can accept.
4
Upscale & Download
Click "UPSCALE PDF". Each page is processed in turn, then the new PDF is downloaded automatically. You can re-download from the sidebar until you close the tab.
Understanding Upscale Options: 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x and DPI
Each upscale setting represents a real tradeoff between clarity, file size and processing time.
1x — Enhance only
Renders each page at its original pixel dimensions, then applies contrast and sharpening. Useful for scanned PDFs whose resolution is acceptable but whose contrast is poor — old faxes, faded photocopies, grey-looking scans. Does not increase resolution, so file size grows only modestly.
2x — Moderate upscale
Doubles each side, quadruples total pixels. This is the sweet spot for most scanned documents: a 150 DPI scan becomes a 300 DPI document, print quality improves noticeably, and file size stays manageable. Recommended default.
3x — High upscale
Triples each side, nine times the pixels. Good for smaller documents where you want maximum print sharpness and can accept a larger file. Processing takes longer because each page canvas is much bigger.
4x — Maximum upscale
Quadruples each side, sixteen times the pixels. The limit of what is practical in a browser. Use only when a print shop or portal requires very high resolution and the document is short.
Target DPI — exact print resolution
150 DPI is adequate for screen and draft prints, 300 DPI is the print industry standard, 600 DPI suits fine-detail printing and archival, and 1200 DPI is professional-grade. The tool converts your DPI choice into the correct render scale (DPI ÷ 72) and automatically caps extreme values so the canvas fits within browser limits.
Output quality
Maximum (JPEG 0.95) is best for archival; Balanced (0.92) is the recommended default; Compact (0.85) trades a little image fidelity for a noticeably smaller file. Since upscaling already inflates file size, Compact is often a sensible choice at 3x and 4x.
When Should You Upscale a PDF?
Upscaling is the right tool in specific situations. It is the wrong tool in others.
Good reasons to upscale
Print shop requirements. Many print shops reject files below 300 DPI. Upscaling a low-resolution scan is often faster than rescanning the original.
Legal and archival submissions. Courts, archives and government portals frequently require 300 DPI or higher for scanned exhibits.
Improving old scans. Documents scanned a decade ago at 150 DPI or less can be made more readable with upscaling plus enhancement.
Enlarging a page. If you need to print a PDF at a larger physical size than intended, upscaling keeps the print sharp.
Presentations on large screens. A low-resolution scan projected onto a big display looks blocky; upscaling smooths it.
Meeting portal upload rules. Some systems check the embedded DPI of images and reject anything below a threshold.
When upscaling will not help
Text-only vector PDFs. Real text and vector graphics are already resolution-independent. Rasterising them can make them slightly worse, not better.
Already-high-resolution scans. Upscaling a 600 DPI scan to 1200 DPI adds file size without visible benefit.
Severely degraded sources. If the original scan is heavily blurred, noisy or full of JPEG artifacts, upscaling magnifies the problems.
When file size is the priority. Upscaled files are much larger. Use the Compress PDF tool instead if you need a smaller file.

Best Practices for Upscaling PDFs
Start at 2x. For most documents, 2x plus Smart Enhancement is enough. Going higher adds file size without proportional visual benefit.
Check the source first. Zoom into the original PDF. If the text is already crisp, upscaling will not help — it may even soften real vector text.
Use Target DPI when a form demands it. If a portal says "minimum 300 DPI", use Target DPI Mode at 300 — do not guess with scale multipliers.
Prefer Compact output at 3x and 4x. Upscaled files are already large; Compact output keeps them within a workable range.
Keep the original. Upscaling is a lossy transformation for any embedded raster content. Never overwrite your source file.
Use Compress PDF afterwards if needed. If the upscaled file is too large for email, run it through our Compress PDF tool at Medium quality.
Process one document at a time. Each page consumes significant memory; multi-document batches are better handled individually.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Why is my upscaled PDF so much larger?
Higher resolution means more pixels per page, and more pixels mean bigger embedded images. A 4x upscale produces 16× the pixel data. Combined with JPEG quality 0.92, this typically multiplies file size by 5–15×. Use 2x and the Compact output quality if size is a concern.
The text in my PDF is no longer selectable after upscaling.
Correct — this is expected. Upscaling rasterises each page, so any real text becomes part of a high-resolution image. If selectable text matters more than resolution, do not upscale; the original PDF already has infinitely sharp vector text.
Processing is very slow on a long document.
Each page is rendered, enhanced and encoded sequentially. A 100-page document at 4x can take a few minutes. Reduce the scale to 2x, disable Sharpening, or split the document first.
Why did the tool cap my DPI at a lower value?
Browsers limit canvas dimensions. If a page rendered at your chosen DPI would exceed roughly 25 megapixels, the tool automatically reduces the scale to stay within safe limits and reports the effective DPI. This prevents crashes on very large pages or extreme DPI settings.
Some pages look slightly different after upscaling.
Pages are rasterised, so very fine hairlines, subtle gradients and certain vector effects may render slightly differently from the original vector source. This is normal for any browser-based raster upscaler.
Can I upscale a password-protected PDF?
No. Encrypted PDFs must be unlocked before processing. Remove the password using your PDF reader first, then run the unlocked file through the upscaler.
My scan is still blurry after upscaling.
Upscaling cannot recover detail that was never captured. If the original scan is genuinely out of focus or extremely low resolution, no amount of interpolation will make it sharp. In that case, rescanning the physical document is the only real solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I upscale a PDF to 300 DPI?
Upload your PDF, switch to Target DPI Mode, tap the 300 DPI preset (or type 300), leave Smart Enhancement on, and click UPSCALE PDF. Each page is re-rendered at 300 DPI and rebuilt into a new PDF, which downloads automatically.
How do I upscale a PDF to 600 DPI?
Select Target DPI Mode, choose the 600 DPI preset, and click Upscale. 600 DPI output is very large — each page can be 25+ megapixels — so processing takes longer and the output file will be significantly bigger. For long documents, consider upscaling only the pages that need it by splitting the PDF first.
Will upscaling make a blurry PDF sharp?
It will make it look sharper on screen and print more cleanly, but it cannot recreate detail that was never captured. High-quality interpolation plus mild contrast and sharpening improves perceived clarity — especially on old scans — but a genuinely out-of-focus source stays soft.
Does upscaling work on text-only PDFs?
Upscaling works best on scanned or image-based PDFs. Real vector text is already infinitely sharp, so re-rendering it as pixels is technically a downgrade. Use this tool when you specifically need a higher-resolution raster version (for a print shop, for example) or when the PDF is a scan.
What is the difference between Scale Mode and DPI Mode?
Scale Mode multiplies the render resolution directly: 2x, 3x, 4x. DPI Mode targets a print resolution in dots per inch, which is more meaningful when a print shop or portal specifies a DPI requirement. Internally, DPI is converted to scale with the formula scale = DPI ÷ 72.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. All upscaling happens locally in your browser using pdf.js, the HTML Canvas API and pdf-lib. Your file never leaves your device. When you close the tab, everything is wiped from memory.
Why is my upscaled PDF so much larger?
Higher resolution means more pixels per page, which means bigger embedded images. A 2x upscale produces 4× the pixels; a 4x upscale produces 16×. Combined with high JPEG quality, file size commonly grows by 3–15×. Use the Compact output quality and 2x scale if size matters, or run the result through our Compress PDF tool afterwards.
Does the tool detect my search keyword automatically?
Yes. If you arrive from a link like ?dpi=300, ?scale=4x or ?q=upscale pdf to 300 dpi, or from a URL such as /pdf-upscaler-300-dpi, the tool reads that intent, switches to the right mode, pre-fills your setting, and updates the page heading accordingly.
Can I upscale multiple PDFs at once?
This tool processes one PDF at a time for maximum quality control and to keep memory usage manageable. For multiple files, run them through individually — each takes only a few seconds for short documents.
Does upscaling add a watermark?
No watermarks, ever. Your upscaled PDF contains only the original content — nothing else is added.
Is this tool really free?
Yes — completely free, no signup, no hidden fees, no daily limits. Use it as often as you need.
Can I upscale a PDF on my phone?
Yes, the interface is fully responsive. Mobile devices have less memory than desktops, so very high DPI upscales of long documents may be slower or fail on older phones. 2x scale on a short PDF works fine on most modern mobile browsers.
