Four Ways to Split

Every Page — one PDF per page

Choose the Every Page mode and click Generate Split. The tool creates one PDF for each page in the document. A 20-page PDF produces 20 single-page PDFs, named document_page_1.pdf, document_page_2.pdf, and so on. This is the right mode when you want to distribute individual pages or submit pages separately.

By Ranges — one PDF per range

Choose the By Ranges mode and enter your ranges in the input field. You can mix ranges and single pages: 1-3, 5, 7-9 produces three PDFs — one containing pages 1, 2, 3; one containing just page 5; one containing pages 7, 8, 9. Ranges are inclusive, so 1-3 includes page 3. You can enter ranges in any order, but the pages within each output are always in their natural reading order.

Every N Pages — fixed-size chunks

Choose the Every N Pages mode and set the chunk size. A 10-page PDF with N set to 3 produces four files: pages 1-3, pages 4-6, pages 7-9, and page 10 by itself. The last chunk is allowed to contain fewer pages than N. This is useful for splitting long scans into evenly sized parts, or for dividing a document into deliverable sections of a fixed length.

Extract Pages — one PDF with only what you need

Choose the Extract Pages mode and enter the pages you want to keep. The tool produces a single PDF containing just those pages, in the order you list them. Unlike the other three modes, Extract always produces one output, not many. This is the fastest way to pull a signature page, an appendix, or a specific diagram out of a larger document.

What happens to the original file

Nothing. The split operation reads the original PDF and copies the selected pages into new documents. Your original file on disk is never modified. This means you can experiment with different split modes and ranges without any risk of losing the source.

What gets preserved

Each output PDF contains a verbatim copy of the pages you selected. Text stays selectable and searchable, images keep their original resolution, vector graphics stay crisp, form fields keep working, and annotations, links, and metadata on those pages are preserved. Why the output is faithful to the source

Because splitting copies the page objects verbatim, the visual content of each page is identical to the original. • Use ZIP for many outputs. Downloading 40 individual PDFs is slow and awkward — the ZIP download is faster and cleaner.
• Keep the original. The tool does not modify the source file, but saving the split outputs to a new folder is good practice.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

My range input is rejected.

The input field expects a comma-separated list of ranges or single pages. Each token must be a number (for a single page) or two numbers joined by a dash (for a range). Examples of valid input: 1-3, 5, 1-3, 5, 7-9. Invalid tokens are shown as red chips with a tooltip explaining the problem.

Some pages are missing from the output.

Check the ranges you entered. Ranges are inclusive and pages outside the document's page count are ignored. If you entered 1-100 on a 20-page PDF, the tool will copy pages 1 through 20 and silently ignore the rest. The output summary shows how many pages were covered.

The output PDFs are larger than expected.

Each output PDF has its own cross-reference table and document structure. For very small outputs (say one page each), the fixed overhead per file can be a few kilobytes. This is normal. Run the outputs through our Compress PDF tool if you need to shrink them.

My ZIP download does not contain all the files.

Check the file count shown in the outputs list. If the count matches your expectation, the ZIP contains every output. If a specific output is missing from the ZIP, try regenerating the split — occasionally a browser tab can run out of memory for very large splits.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

If the PDF requires a password to open, you will need to provide the password first. The tool sets ignoreEncryption on load, which helps with encryption dictionaries it cannot process, but it cannot bypass a password you do not know.

The tool seems slow with a very large PDF.

Rendering thumbnails and generating outputs for a 500-page PDF takes longer than for a 10-page one. The progress bar shows the current status. If you only need a few pages, use the Extract mode — the tool still reads the full document, but the output is much smaller.
